OUR PURPOSE

I like Paul’s definition of the Church as Christ’s body in Ephesians 1:23:  the church is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. The Church is just exactly what Christ wants in the world to do what needs to be done to the praise of his glory (Eph. 1:14).

Now really, what else do you need to know about how much God values the Church in the world?  And, we are all members of that body.  How?

For by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

                                                (Eph. 2:8-9)

That’s part of the “How?” of salvation.  What about the “Why?”  Why didn’t God just grab us up and take us home to be with him?  Look at the very next verse and you will discover the “Why?” You will see there is something more to it than just God and Me with Jesus in between and the Holy Spirit in my life.  That’s about as far as some folks get, though.

But, there’s more to it than all that.  We also see the why:  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:10).  Here’s the purpose of the new creation in Christ Jesus.  Created. . .to do good works.  Purpose?  That’s why we exist in the world.  That’s why he didn’t just say, Well done!  and, as we noted earlier, just grab us up to heaven.  The Church is in the world for a purpose.

There’s work to do.  There’s work to do in the community.  There’s work to do at Baccus Elementary.  There’s work to do at GMS.  There’s work to do at the CSC.

Jesus said, Go. . .make disciples (Matt. 28:18).  Look around you.  There are many people who need us to Go!  Where all have you been?  How many disciples did you make?  How many were left?  Really now, have most of us ever been?  When are we going to go?  What’s the holdup?

Look for God’s Greatest Gift!  It’s coming—sometime soon!  Be ready.
